"there's a crack in everything..."

"...there is a crack, a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in."

Leonard Cohen

It's Work (really!)

I spend an inordinate amount of time in front of the computer screen. I call it 'Work' (with a capital WOO). It's easier that way because people tend to leave me alone. Just between you and moi it's not all 'Work-with-a-capital-W'. Sometimes, I call it 'Research' and at other times it's Professional Development. Thankfully, I now have added another whole galaxial layer I can blame for my absence from family weddings/christenings/reunions. It's called Social Media. It too is ascribed the special capital letter status.

Social Media now means I 'need to' stay in touch all the time with a virtual constituency or I risk becoming irrelevant or worse redundant (especially if you are a twitchety twitterer...the motto which seems to be 'you are only as good as your last twitter').

This all takes time. A lot of of it, a lotta, lotta time. I am lucky that it is part of my "Work". To many of my Baby Boomer cohorts, the mob I call Before Internet Mortals (BIMs), spending this much time in front of a flickering, lit screen is both incomprehensible and inconceivable. Children need to be fed/bathed/tamed, the dog bathed/walked/pooped, the hubby (all of the above).

I take their point. I am not advocating BIMs farm out their personal lives to do as I do. However, hurling out the proverbial baby-bathwater thingy means that the advantages of some social real treasures are being missed.

101 Introduction to Social Media

If you would like to stay in touch with the latest happenings subscribe to our RSS feed (if you don't know what it means we will be explaining this in our RSS 101 post). We also love receiving your comments, so go on be brave, post a comment.

Web Gems :: The Longest Solar Eclipse Photos

One of the greatest joys of spending so my time in front of a computer screen (for 'Work' purposes of course) is that occasionally I come across some rare, uplifting gems. This site is one such gem.

The longest solar eclipse of the century

" Earlier today, the moon passed directly in front of the sun, causing a total solar eclipse that crossed nearly half the Earth - through India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar and China. Today's was the longest total solar eclipse of the 21st century, lasting as much as 6 minutes and 39 seconds in a few areas. Despite cloudy skies in many of the populated areas in the path, millions of people gathered outside to gaze up and view this rare event. Collected here are a few images of the eclipse, and those people who came out to watch." Source :: The Big Picture :: Click to visit the site
